Chapter Seven
The following weekend, Linc walked into the den and shut the door, cutting off the loud music coming from the second floor. It sounded like a rock concert instead of a sleepover for Nikki and five of her friends.
Linc sank into the leather chair behind the oak desk with a sigh. Ah, silence. He glanced around the knotty-pine-paneled room. The floor-to-ceiling bookcase covering the wall dulled the noise considerably.
âNot exactly soundproof, but itâll do,â he said, thinking he might just sleep here tonight, eyeing the long sofa by the fireplace. His thoughts turned to Meg. How was she handling all the commotion? The last heâd seen of her was when he walked past Nikkiâs bedroom. Meg was right in the middle of the crazy activity, doing whatever it was that girls did when they got together.
He leaned back in the chair wishing Meg wanted to be with him instead of in a room full of noisy thirteen-year-olds? Why couldnât she join him, steal a little time for the two of them?
But that wasnât going to happen tonight.
Things between them had cooled since heâd walked out of her room that night in San Antonio. It was his own fault. He hadnât been able to face his own feelings, let alone deal with Megâs. He closed his eyes as the scene in the hotel room flashed through his head. Meg naked and willing in bed.
Every lonely night of the past week, his aching body had reminded him how much heâd wanted her. Still wanted her. He shot out of the chair and started to pace. God, heâd never wanted a woman so much. But you didnât take a woman like Meg to bed and just get up and leave the next morning. She was the kind of woman who expectedâ¦He stopped pacing. Expected what? Love? Marriage?
What did he expect? He closed his eyes, remembering her touch, the feel of her mouth against his, her beautiful eyes, the soft blush on her cheeks, the way she smiled when she sat on a horse. The thrill he got when she turned that smile on him. Linc knew that Meg would never have wanted to make love to him if she hadnât cared for him deeply. And what had he done? He had gotten up and walked out on her when she had been the most vulnerable.
Worst of all, they hadnât talked since that night a week ago. They flew back to the ranch in silence, and heâd been avoiding her ever since. It was time he explained things. Make Meg understand it was for the best, that he didnât have the luxury of thinking about a personal life until things were straightened out with Nikki.
He turned to the mounds of paperwork piled on the table behind the desk. For months the family lawyer had been asking him to go through his dadâs papers. This was a good time to sort through the mess. The faint sound of music rumbled through the room. What else did he have to do?
Linc went to the cabinet and opened the door, exposing a wall safe.
